Looking for a new job can be stressful and confusing, add on top of that some little known etiquette must dos and you’ve got yourself a complete minefield! We’re here today to give you our top dos and don’ts to make this a smooth sailing process.

Do: Always let your consultant know when you cannot make an interview, even if you do not want to reschedule that interview because you have changed you mind. We’re all human, these things happen so best to keep us in the loop.

Don’t: Ghost your recruiter. We understand that you may be using multiple agencies or that you may already be interviewing elsewhere, that is ok, we expect that. Just be honest and send us a text/email to say that you have another role, or where you are at with the interview for the other role so we can keep our clients in the know. Who knows it may work in your favour with an amazing offer!

Do: Be contactable. Recruiters and hiring managers need to act fast in this constantly moving industry, the tsunami of going from interviews, to reference checks to offers can happen in the space of days if not hours so if you are MIA this could stall you getting the job of your dreams!

Don’t: Be late to interviews. Seems like a no brainer but you would be surprised by how many people don’t plan ahead and get caught in traffic/public transport delays or internet issues. Most of these can be avoided by giving yourself plenty of time to make alternative arrangements.

Do: Be polite. Saying thank you and please can go a long way believe it or not. Who would have thought right??

Don’t: Wing it. Always be prepared. There are huge amounts of tools and practice questions available online to help you practice receiving those hard hitting questions. If you come in prepared you won’t have the tendency to ramble and totally miss answering the question in the first place.

Do: Give your recruiter all the facts. If you are going for an interview that is for a full time position but actually want part time, then say it! The same goes for salary expectations, be upfront right from the start about what you would like to aim for. You don’t want to waste peoples valuable time and this will help keep up your good rapport with all parties involved.

Don’t: Talk over the top of people. Again, this may seem like a no brainer, but sometimes you can get caught up in trying to not forget an answer to a question but this can come off as being rude and aggressive.

Do: Have good body language. Slouching or bad presentation can come off as you not being interested or wanting the job. So be sure to put your best foot forward, sit up straight, don’t fidget and nail that interview!

Don’t: Use your embarrassing first email address that is usually something far too inappropriate for the professional world.
