Want to Find Your Next Ideal Job? Follow These Tips!

Looking for a new role can be an exciting yet challenging time and we have put together some key things to consider and keep an eye on when commencing your job search.

Do Your Research

Read up on the firm you are considering. Have they had positive feedback on socials and in the news? Have they received awards for their work on creating a positive, safe and supportive work environment? Also consider their key values, these are usually highlighted on their website and showcase how they treat and value their staff and clients and can including areas such as Diversity and Inclusion, Pro Bono work, flexibility provided to staff, the list goes on. Another good idea is to ask around, there’s always the saying ‘six degrees of separation’ meaning everyone knows someone, especially in the legal industry!

Opportunities for Growth

What can this firm offer you that will help your career progress? Do they have clear development opportunities, learning and development programs, mentoring programs and a passion to progress their staff? This is a key point to consider, especially for junior support staff and lawyers as this is a time where you need all the support and guidance they can offer you. Creating a good foundation in the early years of your career will set you up for a long and successful career.

Location and Work Environment

Now that we are seeing most companies successfully working flexibly with hybrid arrangements a very important consideration is the location and working environment. Having an easy commute makes the world of difference when you are looking for a great worklife balance in our ever-busy lives. Your work environment should be something that does not cause anxiety or stress so getting a tour of the office can be a good way to consider if this is the right firm for you.

Long Term Plans

A big thing that can help you make the decision is asking yourself the question ‘Can I see myself here in 3-5 years’ time?’ If the answer is yes then you know you have found the one! If you are unsure, ask the firm about a few of the above-mentioned areas, you can generally get a sense of the firm through asking other staff about their experiences.

Remember to consider these two key areas, your basic needs such as location, salary, environment, culture, and your growth needs like whether they will help your progress your CV and career for the better, will they provide support and development opportunities. Happy searching!
