Australia is one of the lucky countries that gets a whole 4 weeks (20 days) annual leave, with some employers even offering an extra week or purchase leave arrangements. Today, we’re here to talk about how you can make the most out of those leave days to fit in some extra-long weekends and holidays!

The key thing to remember when you are wanting more bang for your buck is public holidays! We get a whole heap of these throughout the year and depending on which state you live in, you can utilise these to get up to over 50 days of holidays!

Here’s an example of how someone in Melbourne can get up to 59 days of holidays:

Date Time Off
1-2 January (New Year’s Day) 2 days without needing to take any annual leave
21-29 January (Australia Day) 9 day holiday if you use 4 days annual leave
11-13 March (Labour Day) 3 day long weekend
1-16 April (Easter) 16 day holiday and you only need to use 8 annual leave days!
22-30 April (Anzac Day) 9 day holiday if you use 4 days annual leave
10-12 June (King’s Birthday) 3 day long weekend
29 Sep – 1 Oct (AFL Grand Final) 3 day long weekend
4-7 November (Melbourne Cup) 4 day long weekend if you use 1 annual leave day
23 Dec – 1 Jan (Christmas) 10 day holiday if you use 3 days of annual leave

The even more important thing to remember is making plans in advance and booking in your leave. Studies have shown that those who have leave booked in are more productive and happier as they have something to look forward to, as well as feeling refreshed upon their return. Studies also show that you are less likely to cancel your holidays if you already have booked plans, so for those pesky workaholics there is no excuse to utilise your valuable time!

We don’t know about you, but we’re already planning our next destination. Happy holidays!
